Are EMFs during Pregnancy a Real Danger?

Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are all around us all the time.

From electrical power lines to TV and radio broadcasts, blocking yourself completely from EMFs during pregnancy is nearly impossible. Thankfully, you don’t have to! Some EMFs are totally natural, normal, and harmless.

However, despite the limited conclusive studies of EMFs and their effects on the human body, especially at the levels our kids are exposed to vs. how much we were exposed as children, there are some proven dangers.

Dr. Axe has an excellent post on electromagnetic radiation, its sources, and its dangers. Below are the four “major” dangers of technology-based, manmade EMFs (for example, cell phones) listed in his post.

  1. EMFs may cause cancer.

“Preliminary results of a large, $25 million government study released in 2016 found that cell phone radiation could increase the risk of malignant gliomas in the brain and schwannomas of the ear. (Schwannomas are rare tumors that in nerve sheath.)” //

The World Health Organization also listed cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen for humans back in 2011. Carcinogens can cause cancer in living tissue.

  1. EMFs affect the brain.

In studies conducted by the Environmental Working Group, cell phones increase glucose in the brain when phones are on for a certain amount of time. Glucose “could cause inflammation in the brain, leading to illness.”

  1. EMFs may fuel dementia.

In lab studies looking into the effects of radiation, researchers found damage to the neurons of the brain linked to memory loss. The radiation “seemed to poke holes in the barrier between the circulatory system and the brain, allowing toxins to make their way into the brain.”

  1. EMFs affect our antioxidants.

Studies have shown that talking on a cell phone can lead to “a 25 percent lower level of salivary antioxidant levels.” The antioxidants in our saliva are crucial for fighting pathogens.

Whether you believe EMFs are a danger during pregnancy or not, the fact is we really don’t have the research to show that electromagnetic radiation is totally safe – for Mom or Baby.

What can you do about it?

If you want to take precautions against the unknown, and known, dangers of EMFs during pregnancy, here’s a few simple things you can do:

– Keep your cell phone away from your body.

If you must carry close to you, consider getting a proven EMF-reducing smart phone case. Also, avoid your Bluetooth and speakerphone or text instead to reduce those EMFs during pregnancy.

– Keep your computer away from your body.

If you must use a laptop, get the . This will protect your little one from both the radiation and heat.

– Try “Earthing.”

Earthing is the simple act of walking with bare feet on sand, grass, or dirt (basically, Earth) to ground yourself. There’s strong science behind this. Grounding results “in significant reductions in voltage in the body.” If you want to learn more about it, check out the book .

– Unplug appliances as often as possible, and keep technologies out of the bedroom.

“Avoid unnecessary, ridiculous Wi-Fi technology, such as wireless pacifiers that monitor a baby’s temperature.” //

– Eat High Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) foods.

Foods like pecans, blueberries, cinnamon, dates, and cilantro can help heal EMF-related DNA damage. So can nutrients and superfoods like iodine, Vitamin D3, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and zinc.

Check out Dr. Axe’s original post for an easy-to-read, printable infographic of ORAC foods. Print it and put it on your fridge to remind yourself of these healing, nutritious foods.

We know so little about EMFs, it’s better to be safe than sorry, right Momma? Stay safe!
