7 Signs You’re Ready to Have a Baby

Wondering if you’re ready to have a baby?

Maybe you’ve been bitten by the new baby bug! If you’re already swooning at the thought of your own bundle of joy, here are a few more signs you may be ready to have a baby.

1. Your Capacity To Love Is Huge.

Do you feel loved, nurtured, and fulfilled yourself? If so, you are ready to overflow some of that love onto a baby. You don’t know true love until you have sacrificed sleep for late night feedings and wiped spit-up off your favorite shirt.

Are you ready to love someone beyond belief? You want to go into this thing expecting to love and to give, not expecting a baby to fill all the holes in your heart. Babies do give love, of course, but they are also selfish beings with a lot of needs.

Be honest about your ability to give. Even more importantly, be honest about what you hope to gain by having a baby. Asking for emotional fulfillment from an utterly dependent baby will only result in your frustration, and disappointment.

2. You’re Up For Sacrifice.

Having a baby will change your life. While many of the changes will be great ones, they require sacrifice, too.

No longer will you have only yourself and your significant other to think about. You will now have a tiny human that depends solely on you for nurturing, care, and support.

You can never estimate how much a baby will change things. Everything from your morning routine to your social interactions will be affected. Trying to force your baby into a sleep schedule, feeding schedule, or play schedule for your convenience will only make life harder for everyone. The fact is, a new baby will turn your life upside down.

If you are prepared for that, great! Continue on.

3. You Have Support.

It does take a village. It’s a cliche because it’s true.

If you are going to have a baby, having a support system in place is super important. This can be anyone from a partner to family to friends. Even online support groups and offline parenting groups can be your support. Swapping tips and tricks, watching the baby while you work, and just being there when you are having an inevitable rough day.

Start building and recruiting your support system now.

4. You Are Responsible.

If you are always running late, losing things, and missing commitments, it may not be the time to care for another human.

If you want to have a baby, it is helpful to work on your own productivity and systems first. If you are struggling with being responsible and reliable, that’s ok. There is time to change and work toward greater reliability. Become someone a baby can count on. If you need more time, you could start practicing with a pet…or a plant.

5. You Fantasize About It.

If you have imagined carrying that big belly around, taking birthing classes, and changing those little outfits, you may be ready to have a baby.

Your heart is obviously set on it. You picture lovingly growing your family. Maybe you have even given a lot of thought to breastfeeding and have baby books covering your coffee table. You are getting prepared.

That is a good sign that you are well on your way to parenthood.

6. The Home Is Ready.

You have a stable place for baby to live. You own a home or have an apartment  and rent is paid on time.

Your baby will need a place to grow up, a place to feel safe and well…at home. A Stable environment is a cornerstone to successfully raising a child. If you have a safe place to live in a secure neighborhood, you are setting up that environment.

7. You’re Financially Responsible.

Raising a child can take a lot of funding. You don’t have to be a millionaire, but financial responsibility is crucial. Clothing, diapers, and toys, Oh My! Now is the time to start building a nest egg. If you are in debt, work on getting out. Increase your income if you can and store up some savings.

If you have a love of babies, a willingness to sacrifice, a stable home, stable relationships, and financial stability, you may be ready to be a parent. It is not something to be taken lightly, but you don’t have to be perfect, either. Weigh where you are at currently, how you are growing, and what steps you need to take and get ready for a wild, but glorious ride!

What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with this list? Anything you would add?
